 Official Ratings: 23 Jan 2023 - 29 Jan 2023

This week Happy Valley continues to dominate as the top run of shows remains pretty much unchanged. The Catch debuts on Channel 5, and shoots straight to the top of the charts.

DISCLAIMER: All sources used in this post are linked at the bottom. For any further information, most data will be found amidst these sources. Some topical jargon will also be found alongside these sources. The figures mentioned in this article include the usual platform data (those watching on tablets, phones & PC's) and pre-transmission data (those who watched the series or show before its first airing as part of the likes of a boxset) if it is applicable. Any data labelled with a * symbol means that this data is not included, and is just regular TV live viewing & catch-up alone.

To no surprise, we find ourselves looking at the powerhouse that is Happy Valley. The Yorkshire-bred drama entertained an enlarged audience of 9.66m viewers, showing a pretty respectable rise of almost 1.8m viewers on the series opener. With overnights for the final episode sitting at 7.5m, current estimates could see the final hit 11 million viewers overall. As we slip down the charts, Death in Paradise takes the crown from the other BBC One competitors. The idyllic setting transfixed a solid 7.28m, down only 0.7% on last week, showing some incredible consistency between episodes. These were the only two shows to topple the 7m mark this week. Call the Midwife slipped to 6.71m viewers, to take 4th place across all channels.

ITV1's best offering was Vera once again, the Brenda Blethyn drama saw a gentle rise in viewership to 5.96m. This figure shows some incredible stability in viewership as episode 1 opened with 5.92m, and episode 2 brought in 5.91m.

The Saturday night main competitors saw ITV1 come out on top once again. The Masked Singer entertained a pretty healthy audience of 5.74m compared to Michael McIntyre's Big Show's 5.69m. Both saw an inflated audience on last week, but McIntyre narrows the gap from 280k to just 50k. Can the ITV spectacle keep its lead next week? Dancing On Ice was ITV1's other reality offering, and this week's episode brought in 4.18m viewers according to official data from BARB. This figure sees a nice rise in viewership too, bringing the skating competition back over the 4m mark. This also made it the 4th most-watched show of the day across all channels.

His Dark Materials worked some wonders to put it back above the 3m mark with 3.002m viewers once pre-transmission data is involved. This figure made it the 10th most-watched show of Sunday 29th.

Over on Channel 5, new drama The Catch caught some pretty nice audiences. The debut pulled in 2.64m* viewers, putting it considerably above anything else over there, and becomes the channel's best launch of 2023 so far. Riptide could only manage 2.4M compared. Madame Blanc maintained its audiences well, only falling 0.02m to this week's figure of 2.15m*. A new instalment of Ben Fogle: New Lives in the Wild struck gold, bringing 1.72m* viewers over to C5 at 9PM on Tuesday 24th. There were some royal hits this week too with Kate: Our Queen in Waiting and Secrets of the Royal Palaces entertaining 1.05m and 1.00m* viewers, respectively.

Moving over to Channel 4 saw The Great Pottery Throwdown continue its reign, sculpting a healthy 2.41m* viewers this week, down only 0.07m on last episode. SAS: Who Dares Wins returned on Monday night to a quiet 1.50m* viewers, but isn't too far from previous series with similar overnight ratings of around 1m, data from Thinkbox suggests. Some other notable shows: Know Your S**T: Inside Our Guts (1.27m*), Jon & Lucy's Odd Couples (0.74m*) & 24 Hours in A&E (1.76m*).

ITV2 saw another week of Love Island but none of them managed to make the charts with platform data. Without it, the series still managed to stay on par with figures achieved in the first week. Sunday 29th's episode was the best performer with 2.36m* viewers, whereas the lowest (outside of Unseen Bits & After Sun) brought in 2.12m* on the 24th. Kavos Weekender entertained 0.24m* viewers.

Overall, our last full week in January 2023 saw some significant rises, and some intense knocks. With Next Level Chef reaching just 1.4m* could the ITV1 show keep dropping as it losing another 0.36m viewers. Happy Valley ends next week which means another show may take the top spot in two weeks time, but which show will it be?

TOPICAL JARGON:
Overnight Figure: This is those who watched live or on the same day before 2AM.
Audience Share: This is the percent of the overall audience a given show had at the time of airing. Sometimes, it may say commercial share which is the share it had across channels with advertisements only.
VOSDAL: This stands for 'Viewing On Same Day As Live' which makes up part of the overnight figure, but it is those who did not watch the programme live yet did watch within the same day or before 2AM.
Platform Data: This is those who caught up on alternative screens such as PC's, phones or tablets. This data is used for most shows in this report, unless highlighted with a * symbol.
Pre-Transmission Data: This figure is usually assigned to shows that drop a boxset before the initial airing of the episode in question, so will already have an audience before the first live airing of a given show. Few shows qualify for this data, however, but was available for figures applicable shows in this post unless labelled with a * symbol.
