W3: Official Weekly Ratings Roundup (16 Jan 2023 - 22 Jan 2023)
Official Ratings: 16 Jan 2023 - 22 Jan 2023
Love Island brings out some shine for ITV2, but slips on previous series and Happy Valley makes more progress, gaining viewers once again.
DISCLAIMER: All sources used in this post are linked at the bottom. For any further information, most data will be found amidst these sources. Some topical jargon will also be found here. Unlike the previous two weeks, these figures include the usual platform data (those watching on tablets, phones & PC's) and pre-transmission data (those who watched the series or show before its first airing as part of the likes of a boxset) if it is applicable. Any data labelled with a * symbol means that this data is not included, and is just regular catch-up alone.
Once again, we see Happy Valley make big moves as it topples the 9m mark this time around, gripping a fantastic 9.03m viewers. No other show edged towards these figures, with 2nd place for the week going to Death in Paradise with 7.33m watching, slipping from last week's 7.85m. All shows in the top five seemed to take a dip. Call the Midwife managed 6.92m and Silent Witness dropped to a low of 5.70m as it shifted to Wednesday for its second weekly update. It was Vera that remained the most consistent, only losing 0.01m on last week with 5.91m according to data from BARB.

Of course, a winter edition of Love Island was the brand new show making its debut this week, but opened to a reduced audience of 3.38m, down on 2022's summer opener by 1.6m, and down on the last Winter version by 1.46m. Despite this, it was still, comfortably, the most-watched show ITV2 has seen for a while, and had a strong 620k viewers on platform devices, ahead of most shows on TV. Episode 2 fell to 3.11m, and the remainder fell out of the top 50 even with platform data added. Without the all-important platform data, audiences did seem to falter: WED - 2.31m*, THU - 2.19m*, FRI - 1.94m*, and SUN - 2.21m*.
Elsewhere, Dancing On Ice took a slip, pulling in 3.97m viewers, cutting its audience by 650k, official figures show. The Masked Singer was easily ITV1's most-watched entertainment show with a very healthy audience of 5.43m meaning it managed to best BBC1's Saturday offering Michael McIntyre's Big Show which brought 5.15m. Some concerning ratings came about for Next Level Chef last week, but the show suffered a drop this week too as it cooked up 1.76m* viewers (down 16%). However, this isn't too bad, so if it now maintains these figures it wouldn't be too shocking a figure for ITV1. This is even further enforced when new drama Maternal could only manage 2.40m* after a 1.7m overnight opening; a small time shift, and small audience may not be what was eyed for the channel?
Looking at the soaps, it was the usual cobbled street that sat ahead. Monday's edition of Coronation Street engaged 5.43m where Emmerdale managed 4.78m at its peak, and on the same day. EastEnders steadied to a high of 3.80m on Wednesday, making it the 27th most-watched show of the week.
Outside the main shows, and away from platform data, Channel 4's best offering is in the form of The Great Pottery Throwdown which pulled in 2.48m*. Despite a drop of 280k, it was still top for the channel. In 2nd place, Kirsty & Phil's Love It Or List It rose in viewership, pulling 1.93m* viewers, edging it towards the 2m mark. Junior Bake Off had a nice return, with a range of figures between 798k* & 893k*, putting all episodes in the channel's top twenty. Sunday Brunch held a position in the charts with 490k*.

Channel 5 had another strong week with Madame Blanc at the top at the charts; the Sally Lindsay drama had 2.17m* viewers. Holidaying with Jane McDonald held 7th place, but couldn't quite compete with Cruising with Susan Calman; the former jollied-up 1.38m* compared to the latter's 1.49m*.
Other reality series made headway this week, but not on the level of Love Island. Below Deck took 1st place on E4 with 507k* tuned in, putting it above the several editions of Hollyoaks which could only manage a high of 464k* data from Thinkbox shows.
Overall, this week has seem some gentle rises, or some sharper falls across the board, but C4 & C5 are sitting above the 2m mark, a position these channels aren't always in. Some ITV1 shows are also slipping under the radar, and viewers are flocking from them as a result. Could ITV1 be doing more to engage its audiences?

TOPICAL JARGON:
Overnight Figure: This is those who watched live or on the same day before 2AM.
Audience Share: This is the percent of the overall audience a given show had at the time of airing. Sometimes, it may say commercial share which is the share it had across channels with advertisements only.
VOSDAL: This stands for Viewing On Same Day As Live which makes up part of the overnight figure, but it is those who did not watch the programme live yet did watch within the same day or before 2AM.
Platform Data: This is those who caught up on alternative screens such as PC's, phones or tablets. This data is used for most shows in this report, unless highlighted with a * symbol.
Pre-Transmission Data: This figure is usually assigned to shows that drop a boxset before the initial airing of the episode in question, so will already have an audience before the first live airing of a given show. Few shows qualify for this data, however, but was available for figures in this post.
