W2: Official Weekly Ratings Roundup (9 Jan 2023 - 15 Jan 2023)

 Official Ratings: 09 Jan 2023 - 15 Jan 2023

As we press firmly into 2023, the hit TV dramas show no signs of slowing. Happy Valley witnesses another increase, and Call the Midwife remains healthy. Dancing On Ice makes a solid return.

DISCLAIMER: All sources used in this post are linked at the bottom. For any further information, most data will be found there. Some topical jargon will also be found here. None of these figures include the usual platform data (those watching on tablets, phones & PC's) or pre-transmission data (those who watched if the series or show was released online before its first airing) as the data wasn't available at the time of writing.

Happy Valley continues to impress in the ratings as it picks up even more viewers for episode 3. The show took an incline to 8.41m viewers, data from Thinkbox shows. This puts it over 11% higher than the initial 7.56m who watched episode 1. Call The Midwife saw a slight dip for its third instalment, dropping to 6.84m from last week's 7.1m figure. Despite a drop, it was still, easily, one of the most-watched shows of the week sitting in 4th place across all channels. The Apprentice ticked up slightly, however, seeing a bump of 190k to this week's 7.29m audience.

The two long-running crime dramas, Death in Paradise and Silent Witness continued to dominate, but it was the former who came out on top with 7.70m watching (a 40% share). The latter managed 6.45m and 5.71m, official data shows.

Of course, some new series took to the screens, with Dancing On Ice's fifteenth run performing to a respectable 4.58m viewers, up just over 300k on its overnight audience (according to VOSDAL & live viewing from Thinkbox). This official figure does put it slightly short of last year's opener of 5.03m, but this does include extra platform viewing (from BARB TV) which boosted it slightly. The show's return was not enough to best ITV staple, The Masked Singer which totalled 5.40m viewers, this is still down on last week, but above the 4.9m audience for the series opener. Ant & Dec's Limitless Win ticked up very minimally to 4.30m. Gordon Ramsey's Next Level Chef had 2.09m viewers, seeing a small 33% rise on its overnight audience. Will it be enough to warrant a second series though with it only reaching 32nd in the charts on ITV1?

When it comes to the soaps, of course it's the ITV hard-hitters that come out on top. Coronation Street had its highest audience on the 11th with 5.22m tuned in; Emmerdale peaked on this date also but with a smaller 4.57m figure. The highest figure for EastEnders came on the 9th with 3.91m watching, but keep in mind that this soap usually performs much better than most programmes once platform data is considered.

Looking elsewhere, Channel 4 saw some strong contenders for the top spot, but first place went to The Great Pottery Throwdown which engrossed 2.76m viewers. No other C4 show topped the 2m mark, and the closest competition came from Kirsty & Phil's Love It Or List It & the thriller The Light in the Hall which had 1.86m & 1.83m viewers, respectively. Another new entry came from the hilarious panel show Jon & Lucy's Odd Couples which entertained 1.13m viewers to take 9th place for the week.

Documentary to celebrate the smash 80's comedy, Keeping Up Appearances: 30 Years of Laughs brought in a very steady 1.49m viewers for Channel 5; the show was bested by only a handful of programmes from the likes of Madame Blanc on 2.34m and 22 Kids and Counting which enthralled 1.54m viewers.

It seems a lot of shows have taken a slight dip, but still remain comfortable. With a few new shows airing this week, can they keep up their momentum and either rise or see small drop-offs as they play on? Time will tell.

TOPICAL JARGON:
Overnight Figure: This is those who watched live or on the same day before 2AM.
Audience Share: This is the percent of the overall audience a given show had at the time of airing. Sometimes, it may say commercial share which is the share it had across channels with advertisements only.
VOSDAL: This stands for Viewing On Same Day As Live which makes up part of the overnight figure, but it is those who did not watch the programme live yet did watch within the same day or before 2AM.
Platform Data: This is those who caught up on alternative screens such as PC's, phones or tablets. This data is not currently available for this post, unless showing a data set from past months.
Pre-Transmission Data: This figure is usually assigned to shows that drop a boxset before the initial airing of the episode in question, so will already have an audience before the first live airing of a given show. Few shows qualify for this data, and this is also not currently available for this post.
