W1: Official Weekly Ratings Roundup (2 Jan - 8 Jan 2023)

 Official Ratings: 2 Jan 2023 - 8 Jan 2023

As we pass over our first full week in 2023, numerous shows seemed to pick up the pace. Happy Valley surpasses the 8m mark, and Madame Blanc kicks off strong for its second series. ITV's Limitless Win returns healthily.

DISCLAIMER: All sources used in this post are linked at the bottom. For any further information, most data will be found there. Some topical jargon will also be explained at the bottom of the post. None of these figures include the usual platform data (those watching on tablets, phones & PC's) or pre-transmission data (those who watched if the series or show was released online before its first airing) as the data wasn't available at the time of writing.

Happy Valley made a very healthy improvement, clocking a growth of 8.2% to put episode 2 at 8.18m. This figure made it the most-watched show of the week according to data published by Thinkbox.tv. it was a strong week for BBC One on the whole, with every top five slot claimed by the BBC. Call The Midwife saw a nice rise also (7.4% gain) as it toppled the 7m barrier, sitting comfortably at 7.09m. Silent Witness opened up on the 2nd once again, identifying another substantial audience of 6.96m before slipping ever so gently to 5.93m for episode 2.

This week also saw the return of the reality juggernaut The Apprentice as we saw Emma get that infamous firing from the competition. The Series 17 opener reeled in 7.10m of us, putting it only narrowly below the opening of last series (7.16m according to BARB TV). In this day and age, consistency is very hard to come across, so BBC One's delivery success will not go unnoticed.

Elsewhere on TV this week, ITV1 had some heavy hitters too. Harry: The Interview wound up being the most-watched show of the week for the commercial broadcaster, informing a respectable 5.97m viewers. It sat just under 300k ahead of any other programme as The Masked Singer confused its viewers even more! An improved audience of 5.69m tuned in to watch some celebs sing their hearts out in secrecy (a strong 15.7% gain).

ITV1 drama Stonehouse made its debut with a reasonably audience, but saw a gentle decline throughout its three-episode run, losing 11.5% of viewers by the final episode, which isn't too bad. The series opened with 4.35m making it strong competition, but not quite a match for BBC1's offerings.

Channel 4 had their own crime drama make its debut with The Light in the Hall which claimed 2.43m viewers for the series opener. This figure only just managed to best Channel 5's best offering with the second series of Madame Blanc which performed quite well, gaining almost 1m viewers with catch-up, to sit at 2.27m viewers.

Moving back to entertainment, Ant & Dec's Limitless Win returned for a new series, showing off some impressive winnings to 4.24m viewers. Although still respectable, it was no match for its first episode last year which brought 6.08m to ITV. This shows a rather chunky loss of 30.3%.

Overall, 2023 seems to be off to a strong start when it comes to viewing figures, but whether it can maintain such a solid set of figures is another thing. With the colder weather perhaps keeping more people indoors, viewing seems to be doing somewhat well, but as TV calms, and the chill dims, will we see some new lows as we expect further into the year?

Next week we'll get more episodes of our hit shows, and we'll see whether this upward trend continues. We'll also see how the latest series of Dancing On Ice performs with official figures, and maybe some further figures for Gordon Ramsey's Next Level Chef which only managed 1.57m viewers according to overnight data published by @Digital_i_ On Twitter
