Official Weekly Ratings Roundup (26 Dec 2022 - 01 Jan 2023)

Official Ratings: 26 Dec 2022 - 1 Jan 2023

With Christmas behind us, a run of new shows have made their debut. Happy Valley made a pretty successful return to BBC One, and Sam Ryder's New Year Performance hit some strong numbers.

DISCLAIMER: All sources used in this post are linked at the bottom. For any further information, most data will be found there. Some topical jargon will also be explained at the bottom of the post. None of these figures include the usual platform data (those watching on tablets, phones & PC's) or pre-transmission data (those who watched if the series or show was released online before its first airing) as the data wasn't available at the time of writing.

Happy Valley made a very successful return on the 1st January, entertaining a pretty impressive 7.56m viewers, rising around 2.6m from its overnight audience according to data provided by thinkbox.tv. This was enough to put it in first place on New Year's Day, with second going to Call the Midwife which sat a little quieter than last series on 6.60m. The previous series opened with 7.37m viewers at the same time last year.

Elsewhere, The Sam Ryder Rocks New Year's Eve celebration danced up a pretty solid audience with 4.98m tuning in before midnight, and 6.16m following the famous bongs of Big Ben we all glue ourselves to BBC One for. The twelve minute show that brought in the New Year picked up 11.08m viewers marking a strong 55.7% share of the total TV audience. This puts it considerably up on last year where 10.09m tuned in according to official data from BARB TV

Away from the festivities, a few editions of The Weakest Link performed pretty well, the highest being on Tuesday 27th with 4.38m tuned in, making it the 2nd most-watched show of the day behind the BBC News at Six on 5.43m

Boxing Day proved interesting as BBC Two reached 33rd in the charts with Detectorists; it returned for a festive special with a very solid audience of 3.62m. This put the show way above its last episode in December 2017 which mustered up 1.47m viewers on BBC4. Another Boxing Day hit came from the ratings juggernaut Death in Paradise which pulled in 7.60m viewers, slipping it just ahead of any other drama that week. It was only slightly down on its last festive episode which had 7.93m watching.

As for ITV, its top showings came from the soaps. Coronation Street performed best on the 29th with 5.26m, besting Emmerdale which peaked at 4.39m on the same date. The only other ITV show to break between them was the latest series of The Masked Singer which returned with a reduced audience of 4.92m

Across other stations, Channel 5 drama Riptide did tidy up some nice audiences which stayed quite stable throughout, the best being the show's opener on 2.44m. This still wasn't enough to topple Channel 4's best performers as The Big Quiz pulled in 3.06m and The Great British Bake Off: Festive Specials cooked up 2.85m.

As for morning TV, Sunday Brunch had 0.52m watching, but it was the ITV hard-hitters This Morning and Loose Women which performed best with 1.08m and 1.01m at their highest, respectively.

Overall, it's been a pretty strong week for ratings across the board. Can the new airings hold momentum as we kick on in to 2023, or will they lose breath as more TV begins? Thank you for reading, and check out the sources of this data below.
