This may be a tad rushed as time isn't on my side at the time of creation, but I wanted to do a little trailer breakdown using my knowledge of Series 13 so far, and what the new trailer has to offer us! Maybe I'll be correct about somethings, maybe I'll be wildly wrong?! Who knows? Let's get straight into it, anyway! Oh! Spoilers... Potentially. I do mention filming and such, so yes.. SPOILER ALERT!
So, we open on this shot of 13. There's a siren sound playing, almost as if she's sending some sort of signal out from her sonic. Could this be a homing beacon, or a declaration of war, perhaps? It does appear that she's in a similar location to the Crimean War scenes, perhaps she causes the battle of alerts one of the battling parties of what is to come? It would be interesting to see what her purpose is here. It could also mark the end of the battle, like some omniscient being calling to end it. I've never seen this level of power from the sonic, so I'm intrigued to see how she's doing that, and what she's actually doing???
I believe this is Penelope McGhie. She's been in a few BBC shows like Gentleman Jack. Looking online, her role doesn't appear to be posted anywhere, but I'm presuming she's involved with the Weeping Angels episode. Electrical lighting in the background, the dark Churchyard, all seems like it fits with filming we've seen with the Angels. She speaks of it 'happening again.' She could perhaps be talking about an Angel invasion, or maybe the flux has hit this quaint little town, and she recognises its arrival.
This is an interesting character that could hold a lot of information. It looks like Sara Powell, and could be Mary Seacole, whom she plays. Mary Seacole was a nurse in the Crimean War who set up the British Hotel behind enemy lines. A very brave woman, perhaps scouting for people still alive after battle to take back and nurse to health? She appears with the arrival of Yaz, Dan, and the Doctor. Yaz does appear to be wearing the same outfit for the majority of her shots, presuming they all link to the same episode, and I imagine this is episode 1.
As mentioned, Yaz's outfit does match up with other scenes set around this period. It also appears that the TARDIS is in the background, a shot we are familiar with from filming, the TARDIS team could arrive after a battle, trying to understand what is happening and how the Flux has affected this location, then meet Seacole, then a Sontaran shows up and they have to run for it. Definitely a reasonable storyline for early on in an episode.
We're then given a couple shots of Yaz and Dan, presuming Yaz's is from a later episode where I'm more uncertain of what the potential premise could be, but she's got some period clothing to guide us, 19th Century people believe, which also fits with the time of the Crimean War, so maybe this stretches out for longer than one episode. I presume this already seen shot of Dan is from an early episode, likely with the Sontaran's. Perhaps he is locked up, or transported away and needs to find means of escape?
We then get this lovely shot of Sontaran ships. They appear to be parked up, potentially in Liverpool docks perhaps, judging from the very terrestrial cranes and the night city in the background, you can just spot? Dan is from Liverpool, and it would match the marketing strategies seen. Lovely shot, regardless.
These beautiful effects appear to show the arrival of a creature, perhaps the Ravages (however you may spell it?!). It matches with the creatures we see later in the trailer, and pictured above. They seem hyper intelligent and powerful, a race like no other. maybe they discovered the flux and began their domination through it, which could be a link to Jodie's following line in the trailer.
She speaks of not noticing it, or knowing about it. This suggests it's been going on for a long while, and the Flux has taken its toll numerous times already. Maybe it'll play into why the creatures above say that their final fight has begun, later in the trailer.
It's hard to get a clear shot of this, but it appears the TARDIS is flying over or out of something. Maybe the Flux has destroyed something, or something has exploded and the TARDIS is carrying everyone away from it. There's some interesting colours in the background that mimic clouds and swarms engulfing... Maybe that's what it is, the 'swarm' that Chibnall described the Series with.
Here's Craig Parkinson. He appears to be matching attire for Penelope McGhie above, standing in front of some stately building. Maybe he's an investigator, similar to Sally Sparrow, and intends to know more of the Weeping Angels? It appears he's holding something, a camera, maybe? Taking snaps of what he's seeing? All CV'S have ironically removed any mention of Doctor Who so his role will be a mystery for now.
Now we see Annabel Scholey, I believe. I'm presuming she's in the Angel episode too. I'm not sure what her role is, although it does look like a serious one. There were also filming pictures taken a few months back with an actress and an Angel, perhaps she is taken by one of them?
Next up we see a shot of our fluffy character, apparently known as Karvanista. Having said that, Karvanista is also the name of Dan's friend we saw in his introduction short. Maybe there is a connection, the friend is actually a spy, perhaps, who poses as a human to track Dan down for what he's yet to do? Or maybe his mate is killed and becomes this strangely cute villain? Or maybe the name was just a placement to take us off the trail???
Now we see Robert Bathurst, who appears to be in some sort of war attire, whether he's a chief or general or something like that. Little is known of his role, but I am guessing it's a later episode, related to Yaz's period outfits. Doesn't look Crimean, but would suit World War. Who knows?! I know I'm useless with clothing, but knowing Yaz's period costume would fit with the Crimean War, maybe this would too, suggesting an ongoing story throughout the six episodes, or some of the six?
Now, these Sontaran's are something else! It appears to have arrived at the time of the Doctor's arrival with Mary Seacole, or at leas that would make the most sense in my head. Maybe that's why they ran. I'm presuming the three globes on its collar mean something to do with rank also... This is a leader, maybe, not to be messed with.
An Ood! I quite love the new eye design, they look more peculiar, more like actual eyes, alien eyes, which suits their appearance. I'm interested to see what their involvement could be, but I sense it could be a smaller role. It seems like a futuristic setting, and they are post-human interference, so who knows?! Maybe they're servers in a futuristic bar... We did spot a bar scene being filmed, and they are used as servants, so this would make a lot of sense. I'm sticking by this idea - a small role used to serve whoever the Doctor/Yaz/Dan go and see in a bar in the future. They also use their communicators, so still suggests this idea.
We see quite a few shots set with this green planet-like backdrop. I do believe this could quite simply be an adventure taking place whilst the Sontaran's invade in the first episode. Yaz and the Doctor are just vibing, having these super crazy adventures, oblivious to what's going on on Earth and the Flux. Yaz's outfit matches earlier clips, and I'm confident it's early on scenes. I won't go into much more detail about these scenes moving forward.
I now believe this could be on board a Sontaran ship, and they've been caught investigating. I don't think it's anymore than that. It's the same outfit for Yaz and Dan, so I'm presuming it's that.
This is Blake Harrison and Thaddea Graham. They appear to be jumping down to avoid something. It looks like a wave of energy passing over them, similar to the light the Sonic gives out in the opening shot of the trailer. I mentioned that perhaps being a beacon for war, maybe it's to wipe something out. They do wear a more futuristic attire, so it must take place somewhere we don't yet know. Perhaps they're friends of Vinder, as their clothing and the patterns do match what he wears. Time Agents? Judoon scouts?
Different outfits! I'm now guessing these are for the Angel episodes. That woodland background would make sense with the estate seen previous. Yaz also has something around her neck, a TARDIS key, maybe? Some communication device? I guess we'll see later on Dan does appear to be talking past her, I'm guessing either the Doctor or a character like Scholey's is with them, and they've revealed something awful to her, that Yaz is also comprehending.
This alien planet is being attacked or 'ravaged' by the swarm. I'm trying my best to link Chibnall's swarm mention in their panel interview. It would seem the Flux attacks. The colours of the planet also seem similar to a future segment which I'll analyse here...
The Doctor talks with the character seen earlier, speaking of their fight beginning. It also seems the surface of the planet is disintegrating, or being attacked somewhat. Maybe these creatures are the creators of the Flux instead, similar to Thanos being able to just destroy all planets... They can do it with the swarm/flux.
A pretty weird and creepy-looking alien being, clearly of high intelligence. I'm interested to see what their purpose is.
Now, this is interesting. There's a little pyramid dancing about the centre of the circle as Vinder approaches. The people around it look like Guardians. They all have faces if you look closely enough, but whether they're human or of anything we've seen in the trailers, is unclear. I zoomed in, and they do appear dark or ancient, maybe not even alive. Whatever they are surrounding is likely very important, and has an entity of its own, since one of the creatures seen later on appears to take it, or destroy it, or maybe even absorb it, as seen below. I presume she kills the guardians.
Here we see Blake Harrison again, and it seems he's talking to Thaddea Graham's character. Perhaps she does something unbelievable, and he cannot support it? Stay Away From Me. I wonder what she did/does. It was suggested her character is involved in a Chinese Pirate episode... I forgot about that earlier on, so maybe it isn't futuristic at all. Jodie was spotted wearing a purple tunic matching the attire of this theme also. Thaddea could be playing Zheng Yi Sao, more commonly known as the Pirate Queen. She's also a 19th century figure, so there could be a huge thing going on in this period. She was active between 1805 and 1810, so a few decades before Crimea. She is described as history's most successful female pirate.. So I wonder how the Doctor becomes involved in her story, if this is what takes place?
This appears to be the major battle between Crimean Soldiers and Sontarans. Where it takes place, how, or when is unclear. Maybe it's very early on before Jodie even arrives as seen above? It is led by Robert Bathurst's character, I think, so maybe ignore my references to his clothing not looking Crimean...
Now we see Graham's character surrounded by red grass? They do say Gallifrey has red grass, so maybe it’s linked to that. Unlikely given everything else in the trailer, but still a possibility?? I'm not sure of the connections however. The we see Kevin McNally, or so I believe it to be him, looking at some sort of devastation. Jodie rushing in behind him. Maybe the Angels, again? This one is a complete mystery... Until the next shot at least, which shows numerous angels seemingly trying to enter a doorway... I'm guessing where he's stood, hence Jodie rushing for him. Maybe it's the Churchyard?
We then see Yaz telling someone to save the future, and then we move to Cybermen barging through. It seems to be futuristic, so perhaps they're after Vinder? The lighting matches things.
And now we spot Jodie racing over the battlefield where Crimean soldiers, and maybe a Sontaran or two lay. I am presuming they arrive after the foreseen battle, and go back to understand why. Intense. Moving past that we see shots of Dan falling through that tube. Maybe him escaping the cell we saw previously? We then see the Doctor warning there's no more time... A line that could fit anywhere in this story, it seems.
The shot above is interesting. The Doctor falls through a purple 'thing.' Could it be a Timeless Child reference, it being a similar colour to what we've seen with that. It also matches the repetitive shot of the character falling from the cliff. Maybe we'll get more answers on the timeless child arc throughout. Another battle for Jodie to face.
We then see Yaz shouting and launching herself at something. It appears to match the scene above where Dan talks over her. Someone gets taken by an angel, perhaps? Maybe it's Craig Parkinson's character. He did turn as if someone was there in the shot.
We do then see Sontaran ships exploding, or that's what I'm guessing it is. There's three characters in the foreground. Who? I'm not sure. The one furthest left is likely the Doctor, it would seem. The other two are a mystery. However, the far right one does seem to match a character seen in filming. He wore a black tunic and a peculiar mask and appeared to watch Dan. Having said that, the head shape is a lot larger, Kavanista maybe? NO! I watched again, it appears to be Robert Bathurts's character. There's a plume on his head, matching the era. The middle character is unknown, I can't place them or suggest who it could be. They do appear to wear a lot of robes, however. Maybe it is Thaddea Graham, we just can't recognise much from the back. This would suggest that the Sontaran invasion takes several episodes.
That's the trailer! What a spectacle. So many interesting shots and so much to analyse. Although, I feel a lot of it comes from early on, perhaps hiding secrets of the later episodes.
