Christmas Overnight Ratings 2020 v 2019
Overnight Ratings: Christmas 2020 & Christmas 2019
Overnight ratings, or viewing in general over the Christmas period isn't quite the ratings bonanza it used to be. One show might jump above the rest, but it's a rare spectacle. 2020 saw the return of numerous festive specials, just like the year before, so this just provides a quick method to analyse the data.
All these figures are those released by overnights.tv. They are classed as unofficial because they incorporate live viewing only.
2020 Overnight Ratings
2019 Overnight Ratings
Most shows were down on last year. One show that took a knock was EastEnders, down 1.93 million on 2019's figures and down from 4th to 9th on the chart. EastEnders has took quite a few knocks this year. Ratings are regularly hanging at the 4 to 5 million mark for official figures. This fits that trend.
Mrs Brown's Boys dropped. The 2020 special had 3.81 million watching, down from 2019's 4.63 million (a decrease of 0.82 million). The comedy show has been slowly shedding viewers over the years, but continues to be a staple of Christmas TV. We'll see how it performs for 2021.
Strictly Come Dancing did reasonably better over the 2019 period with 5.49 million viewers. The festive special was down 0.63 million to 4.86 million for 2020. The audience is still tremendously different to the show itself, but the figures do seem to fluctuate year on year for the festive instalment.
Emmerdale saw a drop for this year. 4.11 million tuned in last year with 3.57 million for 2020, a loss of 0.54 million. Not terrible for the show, on par with some recent viewing figures.
HOWEVER, Coronation Street was the only Soap to see a rise for 2020 with 0.07 million extra viewers for 2020. Quite impressive with viewing being down for similar shows. This is likely quite similar to its normal viewing.
Call The Midwife saw a rise of 0.2 million, this year. The show is used to audiences of 9 million or so, usually impacted by brilliant time-shifted viewing. Timeshift will likely be a great impact to the show's official viewing.
The Queen's Speech had a few more viewers this year also, 0.29 million up on last year. The Queen has quick become the one to beat on Christmas Day.
New shows like Blankety Blank couldn't quite reach that of Gavin and Stacey, but performed well and will likely see a full series as a result.
Official viewing figures will be announced on the 4th of January. For any more details on any ratings related topics, drop a comment or drop me a DM on @Ratings_UK on Twitter! Thanks.
